// DARK MAGIC TEMPLE

environment & PROP design

BRIEF //

For this brief, I was designated to design a temple or worship place for one magic source from The Dragon Prince Animation Series. The place should fit with the lore and worldbuilding of the series. In my case, I worked creating a temple for the Dark Magic.

concept //

In The Dragon Prince world, there are five magic sources – The Moon, The Sun, The Ocean, The Sky, The Earth and The Stars that all creatures and elves can use, except for humans, and are used as ‘natural’ process in the world.

The Dark Magic is the sixth magic that was later discovered by humans, presumably. Being a magic that anyone can use including humans, they found it like a chance to have some opportunity to use magic. The problem is that for using this magic it is needed to use the magical energy of something or someone else making it to get dry or die. The dark magic has been seen only as a destructive, terrible force that only creates problems and death by the humans who use it.

However, as I watched in the animation series I realize one of the main ideas is that all magic have destructive effects but also have good, creative effects, depending of people´s intentions. My decision was to develop that different side or perspective for this magic that could complement what it has been shown. This magic takes and redirects that magic to other things because is a magic that connects all the magic, the living things and nature, it is like a fundamental force that we cannot see and unites everything, that connection is the source and that it’s an import lesson that the main characters could learn in their journey, so here is my idea of a temple which could talk about that.

I developed this project at MST Design School for the Kraken Master Program for the Environment Design Term.

It’s quite an ancient temple where the dark magic was perceived in a different way before was abandoned and remained hidden.

It had his peak of importance for the people who gather to learn, share its knowledge and built it with some details decorate it.

The temple was a place where the people gather to teach, learn and study, but also to create magical items in the main altar and talking care of the balance of the magic -using it without harming.

At the library, it can be found written books and a collection of different objects, magic artifacts, ingredients cultivated in the gardens, etc.

In this project, I started thinking about the distribution of the space and how could it symbolize the dark magic as unity and connection with the nature. The plan views helped me to guide my design in that way and then, working with the front views I defined the inner details for the building.

When I established the mood I found some ideas that help me to imagine the possibilities for the temple and what kind of emotions I would like to convey and what kind of architecture styles would reflect that.
